What is Charlie the Wonderdog About?

From the animators behind WondLa (2024) and Monsters at Work (2021) comes the story of a young boy, Danny (voiced by Dawson Littman), who receives a Golden Retriever puppy for his birthday. He names the dog Charlie, and they quickly become best friends. Their favorite thing to do is play together, imagining that Charlie is a superhero dog.

But dogs grow old, and eventually Charlie reaches a point where even climbing the stairs becomes difficult. He barely has any energy left, not even for his favorite biscuits, and Danny starts to realize that Charlie may not have much time left.

That is when everything changes.

How Charlie Gets His Superpowers

A young alien wants a pet from Earth and abducts several animals, including Charlie and a cat named Puddy. Disappointed by his new collection, the alien tries to make them more entertaining by enlarging them, teaching them to talk, and giving them superpowers.

Even that fails to hold his attention for long. Eventually, he sends them all back to Earth, powers included.

Danny is happy when Charlie returns, but quickly realizes that his dog can now talk and fly.

Better still, Charlie is no longer old and frail, but young, healthy, and full of energy. The two decide to keep Charlie’s abilities a secret so they can stay together without attracting too much attention.

That plan does not last long.

Charlie soon starts hearing the voices of people in danger and feels compelled to help. Whether it is stopping a speeding car from hitting an older woman or preventing a plane crash, he repeatedly comes to the rescue.

Before long, people are fascinated by this flying wonderdog, and Charlie quickly becomes a media sensation. He gets to meet President Rose (Tabitha St. Germain) and even gets his own dog food brand.

Puddy the Cat’s Evil Plans

Puddy, meanwhile, is far less pleased with how things are unfolding.

His owner barely pays attention to him and cannot be bothered to clean his litter box, so Puddy decides he has had enough. Now equipped with the ability to talk and an intimidating new size, he starts dominating his human instead.

It works surprisingly well. But no matter how much control he gains, Puddy remains dissatisfied. When he sees Charlie on television being celebrated as a national hero, his jealousy tips over into something bigger.

Determined to outdo Charlie, Puddy devises a new plan. He contaminates Charlie’s dog food brand with his own alien-infected saliva and gives the local stray cats the same powers he has so he can recruit them into his army.

At the same time, he makes sure the people working at the factory taste the food as well, causing them to transform into obedient, cat-like humans.

He also begins setting traps for Charlie, including framing him for crimes in order to turn the public against him.

Naturally, it falls to Charlie to stop the cat uprising and restore order before things spiral out of control.

The Team Behind Charlie the Wonderdog

Charlie the Wonderdog was produced by Vancouver-based Icon Creative Studio, where director Shea Wageman is also president and CEO.

Around 60% of their work comes from collaborations with companies like Disney, Sony, and Warner Bros. But at the same time, they use that same production setup to make their own projects. This allows Icon to make films on a much smaller budget while delivering visuals that feel much larger in scale.

Charlie the Wonderdog cost somewhere between $20 and $30 million, but visually, it holds up next to productions that cost far more.

The Voice Cast

By keeping production costs under control on the animation side, Icon Creative Studio was able to allocate more of its budget to casting, most notably securing Owen Wilson as the voice of Charlie. Wilson is widely known for his roles in films such as Zoolander (2001), Wedding Crashers (2005), and Midnight in Paris (2011), as well as his voice work in Cars (2006) and Marmaduke (2010), which makes his involvement here a natural fit.

The rest of the voice cast is made up largely of newcomers.

What Inspired This Superhero Dog

In an interview with Animation Scoop, Wageman talked about where the idea came from: “I wanted to be an animator, and then I went and saw the 1989 Batman movie, and then I wanted to be a filmmaker. So you’ve got a lot of that animation stuck with the love of superhero movies. You’re seeing that and throwbacks to a lot of our favorite superhero movies in this film, in the form of a lovable dog and his owner. What if your dog could be a hero?”

He wrote the first version of the script back in 2015, not long after starting Icon Creative Studio. After that, the story kept evolving. Writer Morello Inglis worked on a full draft, and Steve Ball later added a punch-up.

What remains is a superhero story grounded in real-life experiences. It explores the emotional relationship between a child and a pet, particularly the difficulty of facing a pet’s aging and mortality, and examines how fame can create distance between individuals.

Is Charlie the Wonderdog Suitable for Children? Age Rating and Family Appeal

The film is primarily for children aged six and up, but it doesn’t stay strictly in that lane. The humor is accessible to younger viewers, though there are moments that lean more toward adult awareness, especially when it touches on media culture and how quickly public attention shifts.

Structurally, it follows a familiar path: clear conflict, recognizable roles, and a resolution around positive values.

  1. It sounds like a nice story and now I know why Grandma washed the “tins” of food before cooking them from a cold oven.
